| How Scroll Saw Blades Are Made
There are three ways we manufacture scroll saw blades. Each method gives the blade certain features, advantages and benefits.
Ground blades have teeth that are formed in hardened steel with a stone wheel. Olson's unique grinding method produces the sharpest possible edge on all tooth surfaces. Because there is little to no material flow, ground blades cut straighter and with more precision. If you want near polished edges, a smooth, sand-free finish and a blade that lasts 3 to 4 times longer....these blades are worth every penny.
Punched or notched blades have alternate set teeth to provide blade clearance during cutting. They provide a medium smooth finish and are generally wider, with the narrowest about .068" wide across the teeth. Notched blades are made from pre-tempered (already hardened) steel and are available with plain or pinned ends and in 5" or 6" lengths.
Milled blades have teeth formed by milling cutters. This method is similar to that which produces band saw blades. Because the milling process creates some material flow (in one direction only), a slight bur may develop. Industrial tolerances are strict - no more than .0015" is allowed. When this happens, the tooling is removed and resharpened. Milled blades are tooth formed in soft steel and then heat treated to optimum hardness and ductility. Olson milled blades are available in a variety of tooth shapes: Skip, Reverse Skip, Double Tooth, Spiral, Metal Cutting, and Crown Tooth. These blades are economical and cover almost every need. Since they cannot be made with pinned ends, blade adapters ar conversion kit (page 13) must be used with scroll saws that take pinned blades.
OLSON 5" PGT, CROWN TOOTH, THICK WOOD, REVERSE TOOTH, DOUBLE TOOTH, SKIP, SPIRAL and METAL CUTTING SAW BLADES are for use with scroll/jig saw machines manufactured or sold by Delta, DeWalt, Dremel, Skil, Rockwell, Pro-Tech, Powermatic, RB Industries, Hegner, Sakura, Shopsmith, Excalibur, Rexon, Ryobi, Sears Craftsman, and Makita. (virtually all domestic and imported scroll saws). They can also be used in hand held fret and jewelers saw frames.
